Tuhoutumisolosuhteet

Toisen maailmansodan aikana siirrettiin Berliinissä Kaiser Friedrich museosta turvaan noin 417 taideteosta. Ne sijoitettiin Friedrichshainin Flakturm II:een Flakturmit olivat ympäri Saksaa pystytettyjä ilmatorjuntatornien ja pommisuojien yhdistelmiä. Flakturm II ja sinne varastoidut taideteokset tuhoutuivat tulipalossa toukokuussa vuonna 1945.

"Probably painted for the Federico da Montefeltro's studiolo in the Ducal Palace in Gubbio, Astronomy is speculated to be one of a series of paintings representing the Seven Liberal Arts, two of which (Music and Rhetoric) are in the National Gallery in London. At the time of its destruction Astronomy was attributed to Melozzo da Forli, and the series has since been attributed to Berruguete before the present attribution to Joos van Ghent.
